Dear Miss Dela,
I have a male friend that is an amazing guy. He is very respectful and a kindhearted soul. He wants to take the friendship further and be a couple. He is everything I look for in a guy but there’s one thing that is holding me back. He is very short. I am 5’9” and he is 5’5”. I love to wear heels and prefer to date tall men. The height really bothers me because I feel like a giant next to him. Should I give him a shot?
I can see why you are bothered about your friend being short. I have tall girl friends, and they also prefer to date tall men. Is his height the only flaw? I am a firm believer that we as humans need to be physically attracted to our mates. At the same time, you have to ask yourself what you are looking for in a partner. Yes physical attraction is important but so is personality. Always remember, we are not going to be youthful for the rest of our lives unless you have money for cosmetic procedures. All jokes aside, we are all going to age someday. Our physical appearance will fade through time but our personality will remain the same. He can’t help that he is a short man. You can’t punish him for being short. The fact that you said he is an amazing guy and there are no character flaws in him, says a lot about him. When you’re in your 20’s, you can have fun and be selective. As we get older, we tend to become less about the physical aspects and more about the individual. This is what I want you to do. I want you to write a list of all the things you look for in a partner. Then, I want you to write down the pros and cons about your friend. If you see that the pros outnumber the cons, you may want to reconsider giving him a chance. I always say, you never know until you try!
